Nestled in the northernmost portion of what was once New York State, Holton Academy is noted for its futuristic, virtually rule-free approach to education. After the fall of the United Nations in the late 2050s, war broke out between countries once allies, originally initiated by an sudden removal of U.S. troops from the middle east. Eventually, the United States, too, fell. Each state became its own country, yet they still called themselves states. Now, in the year 2078, the former state of New York has taken on a new form of democratic government, shielding it from the war still raging on outside its borders.
Holton Academy prides itself on teaching its students based purely off experiences, a facet of the New York Federal Government. In the building itself, teachers and administrators focus on ensuring student behavior is within manageable levels, but off campus, students are encouraged to take risks, and to learn from the consequences of their actions. Teachers and school officials regularly patrol an area off campus known as the Backalley, searching for students caught in some harsh predicament. While Holton wants to stress the importance of learning from experience, it also wants to ensure its students live to learn from said experiences. It is not uncommon, despite these precautions, to hear of student--or faculty--deaths, while within the Backalley.
Holton also offers a series of ordinary classes designed for those students who are not in need of any experience-based educations. In this respect, the school still follows the standards outlined by the New York State Department of Education in the 1990s. Holton Academy is, all in all, a place of both much adventure and learning, as well as an environment feared by those more intelligent students and adults. Some who attend here will enjoy the freedom associated with it. Others will not.
